Depolarization and position angle jumps due to relative longitude shift of pulsar beams

چکیده

Pulsar radio emission is generally found to be linearly polarized over all longitudes of profiles, some times as high as up to 100%. The position angle sweep is in an ‘S’ shape, which can be well understood within the rotating vector model (Radhakrishnan & Cooke 1969). However, depolarization and position angle jumping are often found in the integrated profiles of some pulsars. In this paper, we investigate the effect on polarization behaviour due to relative phase shift between pulsar beam components caused by retardation effect, considering that the core and conal emission components are radiated from different heights. We conclude that the phase shift of beam centers of the different components could cause the depolarization and position angle jump(s) in integrated profiles.

A Further Study of Relative Longitude Shift of Pulsar Beams

It is of great important to study pulsar beam shapes if we are concerned with emission theories and pulsar birth rate. Both observations[9, 16] and/or the ICS model[10] show that different emission components are emitted from different heights. The relative longitude phase shifts due to different heights of emission components and to the toroidal velocity of electron are considered in this pape...

Unusual profile variations in pulsar PSR J1022+1001 – Evidence for magnetospheric “return currents”?

We report a detailed multi-frequency study of significant instabilities observed in the average pulse profile of the 16-millisecond pulsar PSR J1022+1001. These unusual profile variations which are seen as a function of time and of radio frequency are clearly different from classical profile mode-changing. We also note discrete jumps in the polarisation position angle curve of this pulsar which...

Exploring the remarkable subpulse drift and polarization properties of PSR B0818−41

PSR B0818−41 is one of the few pulsars which show multiple drift regions having well defined phase relationship. In this paper we report new results from the multifrequency observations of this pulsar with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We determine the mean flux of the pulsar at multiple frequencies and find evidence for a low frequency turnover in its spectrum. Significant linear...

Geodetic Precession in PSR J 1141 – 6545

We present observations that show dramatic evolution of the mean pulse profile of the relativistic binary pulsar J1141–6545 over a period of five years. These data indicate that the spin axis of the pulsar is precessing due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Observations made between 1999 and 2004 with a number of instruments at the Parkes radio telescope demonstrate a steady, secular evoluti...

Ja n 20 05 Geodetic Precession in PSR J 1141 – 6545

We present observations that show dramatic evolution of the mean pulse profile of the relativistic binary pulsar J1141–6545 over a period of five years. This is consistent with precession of the pulsar spin axis due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Observations made between 1999 and 2004 with a number of instruments at the Parkes radio telescope demonstrate a steady, secular evolution of th...
